Part of New Beginnings on Vancouver Island is set in Liverpool, and until I can find a map for the 1850s that I can use, I think this gives a reasonable idea of the city and its composition. What strikes me is the geographical extent of the dockyards. The hustle and bustle of the port must have been impressive and Stag, my protagonist certainly finds it so when he arrives by boat from Whitehaven. It’s not at all as he thought it would be and it’s quite a shock. He spends a few days there and learns a lot while boarding with Mrs Hudley and her serving maid Our Mary.
